Homemade French Onion Dip

An easy 15 minute appetizer recipe that will have your guests asking for more!

  • 1 8 oz block cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup shredded smoked provolone cheese
  • 1.5 cup onions- raw and diced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • chopped chive optional- to garnish


  1. In a medium size skillet, add chopped onion and butter. Sautee until caramelized. Let sit for 5-10 minutes to semi-cool.

  2. In a medium bowl, combine remaining ingredients, with onions on top of cream cheese to soften. 

  3. Mix well. Garnish with chives if desired and serve with potato chips, vegetables, or flatbread. 

Recipe Notes

Tips for this Homemade French Onion Dip: 

  1. I used a large white onion which yielded about 1.5 cups of chopped onion, but whatever you have on hand will work as well. 
  2. Don't undercarmelize the onions; you won't get the same flavor you're looking for. Wait until the  each piece of onion is brown, and almost candied. Just make sure your onions are brown, and not black- a little black is okay, just don't burn them. 
  3. If you're trying to go low calorie- use greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise, and use low fat, whipped cream cheese in place of regular cream cheese. 
  4. I used shredded smoked provolone; this gives it that delicious, smoky and oniony taste that French Onion Dip is known for. If you can't find this at your grocery store, just opt for shredded mozzarella.
