Pudding…just the sound of it invokes creamy loveliness.   Creamy and rich but made with simple ingredients.  Sugar, cocoa, milk and a couple other ingredients you most likely have hanging around.

Jazz this simple pudding recipe up with raspberries, chopped maraschino cherries, shaved chocolate or just dive in as is!

How to make Homemade Chocolate Pudding –

Simply whisk together the dry ingredients, add the milk and bringn to a simmer.  Instant easy pudding !

What kind of milk can I use to make this pudding?

  • We find whole milk makes the smoothest pudding but you can sub 2% in a pinch. When you go to a more watery consistency milk, like skim or a nut milk your pudding will take on a less silky consistency.  It will work, it just won’t be as smooth.   So stick with whole milk with this recipe if you can!

Keep stirring so your dry ingredients don’t clump on the bottom of the pan!  It will thicken up in just a few minutes.

DO NOT OVER STIR:  A nice consistent gentle whisk will do.  Anything more can break down the cornstarch and leave you with a runnier pudding.  It will still be good just not as thick.

PRO TIP: When it starts to bubble let it continue to cook for about 30 seconds or so….at this point you have reached pudding nirvana. It won’t get any thicker!  But it will thicken up nicely when cooled!

Pour into your pretty little cups and serve either warm or chilled.  This will keep for up to 3 days in your refrigerator.

Cover with plastic wrap to keep the tops from forming a skin while cooling.

Serve this with chopped chocolate, cherries, raspberries, whip cream or just straight up!

I was a little concerned at first with how long it took to become thick but then it switched before my eyes. I put crushed Oreos and mini marshmallows in it and tasted it while still warm and it’s delicious. I just hope it cools down fast so so I can have more.

Scrolled all of the comments and didn’t get an answer so I figured I’d ask directly, can you omit the cocoa powder and make this vanilla pudding? Any other flavors to make with the rest of the recipe as a base?

Is there anything I can use instead of cornstarch? Like baking soda?

Cornstarch is a thickening agent. Baking soda is a leavener. They are not interchangeable. The only sub for cornstarch would be flour. Double the amount. It may thicken it but can’t promise as I’ve never tried it.

Hi! Tried this recipe out yesterday and it turned out delicious. However, the texture was kind of lumpy, which I’m assuming is the cornstarch? Do you have any ideas for what could have caused this and how to prevent this from happening? Thanks!

You could freeze it and eat it like a pudding popsicle but it will not thaw properly…really good pudding pop though 🙂

I think you are fantastic Kathi and Rachel!
Most fast or easy recipes include mixes or premade ingredients and you totally hit it out of the park with this chocolate pudding recipe! I had everything in my fridge and pantry and it truly took 5 Minutes! This will go in the cookbook that I am compiling for my daughter as she loves pudding.
    Thank you so much💖💖💖

Is it possible for the recipe to be converted to grams at all? I’m English so don’t have the cup measurements 😩

I imagine one could use custard powder in place of corn starch and sandwich the mixture between layers of brandy sprinkled finger biscuits or swiss roll. Leave to set and garnish with whipped cream and chopped pecan nuts.

Yes you can. The butter just gives it a nice velvety finish but it isn’t required.

I made this with honey instead of sugar (didn’t measure it lmao) and it was really good!! although very chunky- I definitely should’ve sifted the cornstarch before putting it in. I 100% recommend it though, felt fancy making it <3

The pudding should be very thick when you pour it into the serving dishes and set up totally when it is completley cool.
