These Easy Homemade Rolls are one rise.  No double duty!  This recipe is unique and delicious!  Make these once and you will never go store bought again…they are that easy.  And check out the new video we just added below!
Â
Whats the secret to a great one rise roll? Â Nothing fancy…just simple ingredients put together in a unique way.
How to make Easy Homemade Rolls –
Simply mix and knead your dough. Â Shape into rolls and let rise in a 170 degree oven for 30 minutes. Â Then crank up the heat to 350 degrees for another 20 minutes, Â without ever removing the rolls from the oven! Â Brilliant!
I could probably call these ‘miracle buns’, but I won’t. Tempting though……
This recipe makes 12 rolls. Â If you need 24, we have that recipe for you! Â Easy One Rise Rolls for a Crowd!
You certainly do not have to weigh each roll, but if you wanted to be sure you got an even dozen, they would weigh 3 ounces each.
Or you could just roll into a log shape and cut up evenly into 12 pieces….like a normal person.
Place your rolls on a sheet pan or in a buttered 9 x 13 baking dish. Â Place in your oven set for 170 degrees until double in size. Â They should look like this after 30 minutes.
Now turn up the heat to 350 degrees without removing them from the oven and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until lightly brown. Â Brush with butter and sprinkle with coarse salt if desired.
Tips for Making One Rise Homemade Rolls!
- Serve these the same day you make them for best results.
- We love these with homemade honey butter. Â One cube softened butter mixed with 1/4 cup honey.
- We used regular yeast, not Rapid Rise.
These rolls would be fabulous with our Beef Barley Soup recipe!

Hi I just want to to be sure that for the temperature the oven should be set at 170 & then 350 Fahrenheit ?
LaughingSpatula.com says
Yes, that is correct! They will rise at 170 then without removing them from the oven turn up the heat to 350. I know! Kinda a different method but wait till you see how good it works!

I am planning on making homemade rolls for Thanksgiving this year, and found your recipe. It looks great and EASY! I have Rapid Rise yeast, could I substitute it in the same amount? How large do you make your buns?
LaughingSpatula.com says
Hi Bonnie – I have never used Rapid Rise for these so I can not recommend …one reason is they rise so fast on their own that it simply isn’t needed. The rolls are 3 ounces each, which is in the recipe along with a picture. Thanks!

Making these for the millionth time for dinner tonight! My whole family loves them and I have 2 picky eaters. I stuff mine with pepperoni and cheese. When they come out of the oven I lather them in the melted butter and sprinkle with garlic salt. Of course we also have pizza sauce on the side for dipping…Oh my HEAVEN! Best recipe ever! Thank you!

I have made this recipe half a dozen times and every time it has come out perfect! The first time I made the entire recipe, each subsequent time that I’ve made it I have half the recipe because it’s just for two people.
I always give the first rise 10 minutes. Other than that I follow the recipe to a T. One time I was out of milk so I substituted water and it turned out fine.
Thanks so much for this recipe, it was my first time ever making bread and it turned out wonderfully. I even got the go ahead from my parents to do these for Thanksgiving this year!

Ok… I have absolutely NEVER made a roll that didn’t turn out to be a “sinker.” My sweet honeybuns is so sick with the flu, so it’s chicken soup and my attempt at your rolls. The chicken soup I’ve got down (I raised a bunch of kids and this is what they say makes them “better.”) Honeybuns and I have only been married for 5 months, and he just nods his head and smiles but, so far, my rolls could sink the Titanic. Wish me luck. I’ll let you know how I fare.

Love your note! Let these rise until doubled and maybe a tick more if you don’t trust your bun making skills :). Don’t crank the heat up until they look all puffy and you should avoid ‘the sinker’. LOL!

Wow! Ive been trying different bread recipes since I got a kitchenaid for Christmas. Have made these twice now and they turned out excellent each time. No more trial and error on other recipes that turn out less than desired. Thanks so much for posting this recipe.

This recipe is fantastic!! So glad I found it. I followed it exactly, except I swapped out AP flour for bread flour. Perfection! I will be using this again. ????

Made these for dinner since I didn’t have any other bread to go with our meal and needed something quick. They were a hit!! So soft. I didn’t even put butter on them because the taste was delicious on its own. This is in my recipe box now.

I just finished making these rolls and they are amazing. Easy to make only thing I found out you start timing the oven for 30 min. After it comes up to heat. Had to cook a little longer. I will make these from now on, followed the recipe to the exact directions and they are beautifful.
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
I am so glad! You are so sweet to take the time to send such a nice note! Merry Christmas!
Deb says
Hey I made these twice very good taste but did not rise any at all. I used plain flour ( all purpose) . The second time I let set in oven at 170 temp. Longer I used 4 cups of flour as directed. It did pull away from bowl. I did not roll them out, I just pinch them roll side. I. What can I try now . Thanks
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
Hi Deb – My first thoughts are the milk/water is too hot or not hot enough. It doesnt take much heat for yeast to activate. It’s actually easier to kill it with over hot liquid then not hot enough warm liquid…hoping that makes sense! Use liquid that is comfortable to the touch and make sure your yeast is not expired. I am so hoping you will try this again and have bun success!
Deb says
Thanks for getting back with me. I bet that’s what I did cause I did have my milk pretty warm I will try again. Thanks a lot for sharing your recipes.
Deb says
I try these rolls for the 3 rd time and just nail it! Turn out great! That is exactly what I was doing I was getting by milk to hot. And also I knead the dough for 5 minutes too. Thanks a lot for tip and recipe!!
Deb says
