I love me a fun beverage and in the morning, it’s always coffee for me. I’m excited to show you how to make cold foam! We use a mixture of milk, heavy whipping cream and if you like, you can add in additional flavorings which we’ll talk about, too! You can do this with no special tools but we do recommend using a coffee frother if you have one for the best results.
What is Cold Foam?
- Cold foam is a creamy, frothy topping for a coffee beverage. It can be served on hot or cold coffee.
- It creates a light and airy topping, and you can mix it into the coffee for added flavor.
- Cold foam is as simple as combing the ingredients, and frothing it. I recommend a handheld coffee frother for the best results. The one I linked is under $10 and it’s such a useful tool to have!
- When I make cold foam, it serves as both my creamer, and my topping. The best part about making your own cold foam is that you can make it as sweet, or not sweet as you prefer. I actually like to add a little salt in mine. It makes it almost taste like cheesecake with a tiny bit of savory flavor in it.
Cold Foam Ingredients
- Heavy Whipping Cream: This is what stabilizes the cold foam, and makes it extra frothy.
- Milk: Without milk, the cold foam would become whipping cream. The milk adds a little body to the cold foam without it being too stiff.
- Sugar: I don’t like to add a lot, just enough to give it a little sweetness.
- Salt: This is optional, but I love the sweet salty flavor it gives.
- Flavorings: A few ideas would be vanilla extract, cinnamon, vanilla bean paste, caramel, almond extract, mint extract, coconut flavoring, pumpkin, etc. The possibilities are endless!
How to Make Cold Foam
I really recommend making cold foam right before serving it for the best results. That light and airy texture is what you’re after, and if you make it ahead of time, it won’t keep as well.
- In a small jar, combine heavy whipping cream, milk, sugar and any optional ingredients like salt or flavorings that you like.
- Using the coffee frother on medium. Mix it thoroughly, rotating it around the jar to ensure it is fully incorporated.
- Continue to use the frother to mix it well, until just lightly thick.
- Pour over coffee, and enjoy!
- I like to top my iced cold brew with about 3 tablespoons of cold foam. I like a little more than most people, but you can divvy it up however you like best! That’s the beauty of making your own. ✨
How to Make Cold Foam without a Frother
I realize not everybody has access to a frother, so here’s some tips on how to make cold foam without one.
- French Press: Add the ingredients to a French press, and and pump the plunger vigorously until a frothy texture is achieved.
- Shake Method: You can combine the ingredients in a mason jar and shake them until you get a nice foam.
- Immersion Blender: This works well, but it works fast. Be cautious not to create whipped cream.
- Hand Whisk: A nice arm workout, you can whisk by hand to make cold foam.
