What is a Taco Braid? Pizza dough stuffed with taco seasoned beef, cheese, sour cream and tomatoes.  A simple criss-cross of store bought pizza dough makes it look so fancy but it could not be easier!

Makes a great appetizer or main meal with a side salad.

Taco Braid

This Taco Braid comes together in a flash using store bought Pizza Dough!  It’s a fun spin on our Taco Pie recipe.  Makes a really toteable appetizer as well as an easy dinner and the kiddos love it!

Ingredients for Taco Braid –

  • Refrigerated Pizza Dough. (the kind in the tube by the Crescent Rolls and refrigerated Biscuits :).
  • 1 pound ground beef, chicken or turkey
  • 1 package Taco Seasoning

Don’t be fooled by that fancy exterior!  Believe me when I tell you this is as easy as it gets!

Taco Braid  (see recipe card below for detailed instructions) –

  • Brown your ground beef and drain any excess grease.  Add the water and taco seasoning, simmer until thick. Set aside to cool a bit while you prepare the crust.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees  Line a large baking sheet with parchment or foil.  Roll out the pizza dough to about a 10 x 15 rectangle.
  • Using scissors cut slits down the side of the dough.  About 1 1/2 inches long and about an inch apart.  (doesn’t have to be perfect, it will still look beautiful!)

  • Buffalo Chicken – combine baked diced chicken, carrots and celery.  Toss in Buffalo Sauce and  top with blue cheese dressing.
  • Cheeseburger – leave out the taco seasoning and sour cream
  • Veggie – saute up your favorite veggies like peppers, onions, zucchini, broccoli.  Top with cheese and in the oven it goes!
How to make a stuffed braided bread
  • Brush the top with a bit of olive oil and bake.
  • Bake for about 18-22 minutes.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes.  Top with all your favorite taco condiments like shredded lettuce, tomatoes, salsa and guac of course!
  • Serve with a simple green salad on the side or as an appetizer.

Can this Taco Braid be made ahead of time –

  • Make this stuffed bread several hours in advance.  Anymore and the meat can make the bottom of the crust gooey.
  • Store any leftovers wrapped in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

  • 1 pound ground beef - chicken or turkey
  • 1 1 ounce package taco seasoning
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes 1/2 cup for filling and 1/2 cup for garnish
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment or foil (or spray with non stick spray).
  • Brown ground beef in skillet. Drain any excess grease. Add taco seasoning and 1/2 cup of water. Simmer until thick. About 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool while preparing pizza crust.
  • Unroll pizza crust onto baking pan. Roll out pizza dough to about a 10 x 15 inch rectangle. Using scissors cut 1 1/2 inch strips about 1 inch apart.
  • When taco meat is slightly cool, spoon onto the crust down the middle.

  • Bring the strips up over the taco filling starting on one side and moving to another, criss crossing until done. Bring up top and bottom of braid to seal.
  • Brush with olive oil and bake at 375 degrees for about 18-22 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool slightly. Top with shredded lettuce and tomatoes.
  • Serve with your favorite Mexican toppings like salas, guacamole and more sour cream!

Notes

You can make ahead and refrigerate for several hours before baking.  Anymore and the meat can make your pizza dough a little mushy.
Store in zip baggies or covered dish and reheat in the microwave.  About 45 seconds per slice.
