What is a Taco Braid? Pizza dough stuffed with taco seasoned beef, cheese, sour cream and tomatoes. A simple criss-cross of store bought pizza dough makes it look so fancy but it could not be easier!
Makes a great appetizer or main meal with a side salad.
This Taco Braid comes together in a flash using store bought Pizza Dough! It’s a fun spin on our Taco Pie recipe. Makes a really toteable appetizer as well as an easy dinner and the kiddos love it!
Ingredients for Taco Braid –
- Refrigerated Pizza Dough. (the kind in the tube by the Crescent Rolls and refrigerated Biscuits :).
- 1 pound ground beef, chicken or turkey
- 1 package Taco Seasoning
- grated cheese
- sour cream
- tomatoes
- shredded lettuce
- plus all the condiments you love like salsa and guacamole !
Don’t be fooled by that fancy exterior! Believe me when I tell you this is as easy as it gets!
Taco Braid (see recipe card below for detailed instructions) –
- Brown your ground beef and drain any excess grease. Add the water and taco seasoning, simmer until thick. Set aside to cool a bit while you prepare the crust.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Line a large baking sheet with parchment or foil. Roll out the pizza dough to about a 10 x 15 rectangle.
- Using scissors cut slits down the side of the dough. About 1 1/2 inches long and about an inch apart. (doesn’t have to be perfect, it will still look beautiful!)
- Load on the seasoned taco meat! Top with sour cream, cheese and tomatoes.
- Now start criss crossing the dough. Look how fancy that is! Seal of the ends to keep all the good stuff in.
- Right before your eyes this Stuffed Taco Braid becomes a thing of beauty! Who knew?
What else could I stuff in this bread –
- Pizza – pepperoni, sausage, salami with cheese with a drizzle of pizza sauce
- Buffalo Chicken – combine baked diced chicken, carrots and celery. Toss in Buffalo Sauce and top with blue cheese dressing.
- Cheeseburger – leave out the taco seasoning and sour cream
- Veggie – saute up your favorite veggies like peppers, onions, zucchini, broccoli. Top with cheese and in the oven it goes!
- Brush the top with a bit of olive oil and bake.
- Bake for about 18-22 minutes.
- Let it cool for a few minutes. Top with all your favorite taco condiments like shredded lettuce, tomatoes, salsa and guac of course!
- Serve with a simple green salad on the side or as an appetizer.
Can this Taco Braid be made ahead of time –
- Make this stuffed bread several hours in advance. Anymore and the meat can make the bottom of the crust gooey.
- Store any leftovers wrapped in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Taco Braid
Ingredients
- 1 14 ounce tube refrigerated pizza crust
- 1 pound ground beef - chicken or turkey
- 1 1 ounce package taco seasoning
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup grated cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes 1/2 cup for filling and 1/2 cup for garnish
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment or foil (or spray with non stick spray).
- Brown ground beef in skillet. Drain any excess grease. Add taco seasoning and 1/2 cup of water. Simmer until thick. About 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool while preparing pizza crust.
- Unroll pizza crust onto baking pan. Roll out pizza dough to about a 10 x 15 inch rectangle. Using scissors cut 1 1/2 inch strips about 1 inch apart.
- When taco meat is slightly cool, spoon onto the crust down the middle.
- Top with sour cream, then cheese and 1/2 cup tomatoes.
- Bring the strips up over the taco filling starting on one side and moving to another, criss crossing until done. Bring up top and bottom of braid to seal.
- Brush with olive oil and bake at 375 degrees for about 18-22 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly. Top with shredded lettuce and tomatoes.
- Serve with your favorite Mexican toppings like salas, guacamole and more sour cream!
