How to make Chicken Avocado Burgers!
- I usually cook these on a grill pan indoors, it helps keep the meat moist…but you can certainly grill these outdoors. Just be careful not to overcook. I love this Grill Pan!
- When mixing the avocados and forming the patties – go gently to keep the avocado chunks intact. Using a more firm avocado will help as well.
- These will keep for several days in your fridge. I have frozen them as well, and the avocado holds up really great! Wrap individually and store in freezer safe ziploc bag.
- Great add in is chopped Poblano (for a little heat) or chopped Jalapeno (for more heat!)
- Nutrition info is based on Panko crumbs.
Can I use ground turkey in place the ground chicken?
- Yes, and a lot of comments say it’s great! But ground all breast meat is dry. It is. Can’t change it. The avocado helps but fat free turkey tastes like fat free turkey. We recommend a blend of 93/7 ground turkey if you can’t find ground chicken.

I just made these and I must say they are delicious. The poblano adds just a little heat . I have a few I will freeze.

This is my absolute favorite prep. I cant eat hot peppers but to add just a smidge more flavor i use half avocado oil half jalapeño infused olive oil. Yummo. Also if using turkey I prefer it on the grill. It holds up better than chicken on the grill as its drier and the smoky flavor is divine!

I put juice of 1 lime some onion and pulse in my chopper with cilantro and garlic. Combine with meat then lightly incorporate avocado. Only a sprinkle of plain Panko crumbs. Shaped and put in the freezer for about 10 minutes, held together perfectly.
We had two , two nights in a row. Avocados stayed bright green, perhaps the cooking stopped the browning reaction.
Great with green salsa. Very lean chicken but very moist burgers!

would it be a good idea to roast the Poblano pepper first?
Sara says
These are by far the BEST burgers I’ve made. Definitely saving this recipe and making them again 🙂
Amanda says
We used Almond meal- attempting to be gluten free over here. However my avocado chunks were quite large so that could be it. Would you suggest substituting the almond meal for the egg or add the egg additionally?
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
I think if you reduce the size of the avocado pieces it should be okay. Also increase the almond meal a tablespoon or so if your ground chicken has a lot of moisture. You need it to hold together if you squeeze it in your palm.

So we tried this recipe and it was an epic fail for us 🙁 Our burgers fell apart as soon as we flipped them. Any suggestions?
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
Hi Amanda, we hate epic fails! Sounds like you need something to help bind the meat and the avocado. We suggest an addition of bread crumbs or almond meal in the recipe. Especially if your ground chicken is more on the wet side. Also if the chopped avocado is too big that could be the culprit. An addition of an egg will help bind it as well. Hoping you try again and have better burger success!

Late or not, we appreciate you taking the time to send a nice note! Thank you!

Have you tried baking these in the oven? If so, what degree and time frame do you recommend?
LaughingSpatula.com says
Hi Sarah – you can but it changes the texture and flavor quite a bit. More like a meatloaf. Bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes until internal temp is 165 degrees. Will depend on how thick the patties are so make sure and check with a food thermometer!
Crystal M. says
Hello,
How long do I grill it for? Also if I chose to cook it on an electric stove top, what temperature setting should I use? Also how long would I cook it for?
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
Hi Crystal – I updated the recipe card. So strange, it’s like the last two lines of instructions fell off! I recently moved to a new recipe card plug in, it probably didn’t convert properly. Thanks so much for your note!
Brett says
Just made (and ate) these. Outstanding!. Made a few tweaks which I don’t think alters the recipe.
Used ground turkey breast, added some onion powder, added one egg for binding, and had to use regular bread crumbs. Fried them up on a non-stick skilled with olive oil and finished them off with about 45 seconds in the microwave. Served on a toasted Everhing Bagel, with pepperjack cheese, red onion, relish, spicy brown mustard, and horseradish sauce, with au gratin potatoes.
Ben says
Am I missing something? These were great but thinking about it after the fact, how are they compliant with Whole30 when the Panko Crumbs are included?
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
Substitute almond meal to make Whole30 compliant…mentioned in the recipe several times :).
