This amazing Pasta with Tomato Cream Sauce is going to be your new best friend!  It comes together in a flash and oh those tomatoes, cream and pasta…..topped with a dusting of cheese.  It’s perfect in its simple little way.

Tomato Pasta in a skillet with cheese

Sometimes, a cuppa cream has gotta hit the pan. I mean how much chicken and veggies can one girl eat?

If I am going to splurge on a bowl of pasta, you can bet it’s going to have tomatoes and cream in it.  The simple combo just leaves me all happy and stuff.   (I did have broccoli on the side BTW, it’s all about balance :).

Ooooooo I love a good pour shot and that cream going into the red sauce is making me very, very happy.  It’s  restaurant quality meal you can make at home in no time !

Adding cream to simple tomato sauce

With only a handful of ingredients, this Pasta with Tomato Cream Sauce  recipe is one you will keep around for awhile.   Hit that print button!

Saute some onions and garlic in a little butter and olive oil.  Toss in the tomato sauce, let it cook down a bit…then hit it with the cream.  Not half and half my friends, cream.  Make up those 40 calories somewhere else.  The little bit of cream in this is the show stopper!

Tomato Pasta in a bowl with a fork

Besides being incredibly easy to make, this makes a ton of pasta. I’m gonna be knocking on neighbors doors giving this stuff away.  My neighbors really, really like me.

I used linguine because I figured it was ‘thinner’ and lower in calories than fettuccine. The rational of a chub-o is an amazing thing.  You don’t wanna be in this head….

Tips to make Pasta in Tomato Cream Sauce:.

  • Use any kind of pasta you like, this is all about the sauce.  Penne, bow tie, wagon wheels, doesn’t matter.
  • Add cooked chicken or sausage if you need a protein.
  • Taste test, adding salt and pepper as you go. This should go without saying, but I forget all the time and it can make or break a dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup onion minced
  • 2 15 oz cans tomato sauce
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan plus extra for garnish
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound linguine or pasta of your choice

Instructions

  • Heat large skillet on medium heat.  Add olive oil and butter heating until butter melts.
  • Add onion to skillet.   Cook for 2-3 minutes until onion is translucent fragrant. Add garlic and saute for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  • Add tomato sauce and cream to pan.   Simmer for about 20 minutes until sauce has thickened up.
  • While pasta sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of water to boil. Add about 2 teaspoons of salt.
  • Add pasta and cook according to package directions.  REMOVE 1/2 CUP OF PASTA WATER AND SET ASIDE.  Drain pasta.
  • Add 1/2 cup parmesan cheese to the tomato cream sauce.
  • Toss cooked pasta in with tomato cream sauce.  Drizzle in about 1/4 cup of reserved pasta water and simmer for a minute or two.  Use additional pasta water if needed to reach desired consistency.
  • Serve with additional grated parmesan on top and a simple salad and bread if desired.

Notes

Tips to make Pasta in Tomato Cream Sauce:

  • Reserve a 1/2 cup of pasta water before draining pasta to help the sauce adhere to the pasta.
  • Use any kind of pasta you like, this is all about the sauce.  Penne, bow tie, wagon wheels, doesn't matter.
  • Add cooked chicken or sausage if you need a protein.
  • Taste test, adding salt and pepper as you go. This should go without saying, but I forget all the time and it can make or break a dish.

Hi, can I clarify what this equates to- “2 15 oz cans tomato sauce”? As there’s a space between “2” and “15”. Is the 2 referring to cups? Thank you!

Hi Anna – It’s two (2) cans of tomato sauce that are 15 ounces each. Hope that helps!

Hi Jessica! Yes, you can sub half and half. You might want to add a smidge more to the pot to get it really creamy. Stay warm!

My daughter asked me make her penne noodles with blush sauce for dinner, I had never had blush sauce, so I came across your recipe in my search for what she was looking for, and wanted to thank you! It was a big hit with everyone, and it was easier to make than I expected, so thanks again we will be making this again for sure and I’m eager to try more of your recipes.

This is so good and so easy. I had been making a pink pasta sauce using a can of diced tomatoes and throwing it in the blender. No more – this is going to be my go to sauce from now on! I halved the recipe since its only my husband and me and it still works! One of those recipes you wish you had years ago!

This pasta looks so creamy. I would totally add fresh tomatoes to give a little texture.

Can we use other kind of cheese ? Like cheddar or mozzarella? Bcoz it’s rare to find parmesan in my place

Hi Roshni – do you have access to feta? That would make a nice creamy sauce. Cheddar would be my second choice. Mozzarella is stringy and it gets solid pretty fast as it warms up. Hope that helps a little:).
