Well, the verdict is in- Hot Chocolate Bombs are 2021’s first food trend (remember whipped coffee? Kinda like that!). This Valentine’s Day version is festive and pink, and explodes into delicious hot chocolate with pink marshmallows. We’ll show you how to make them, and list out the tools you need…they are actually pretty simple!
Basic Items Needed To Make Hot Chocolate Bombs
- Half Circle Silicon Mold: This is a must- it’s what creates the outer shell of the hot chocolate bomb.
- Candy Melts: You can use simple melted chocolate chips, or candy melts for the outer shell, but I find that candy melts are the easiest as they microwave very well, and come in a variety of colors.
- Powdered Hot Chocolate: You can purchase this at any grocery or drug store. You could go fancy and use a high end brand if you like.
- Festive Sprinkles and Marshmallows: I used a pack I’ve had in the pantry for a long time but if you go on Amazon and type in ‘sprinkles’ there are loads of options. This Valentine sprinkle mix is really cute and festive!
- Food Coloring:Â Â You can color the chocolate to top them if desired. I just used a small drop of red food coloring to get a pinkish decorative hue.
How to make Hot Chocolate Bombs
- The beauty of using candy melts is that they are made for this type of recipe! Microwave them for 30 seconds at at time, stirring in between. Be careful not to overheat the candy as it will burn.
- Using a spoon, spread the candy melt up and around the mold. Remember that it takes 2 halves to make a whole chocolate bomb. Refrigerate to set for about 5 minutes, or until completely cooled and set.
- Once cooled, remove from refrigerator. Flip silicone upwards and remove carefully. Add hot chocolate mix and marshmallows if desired into one half of chocolate molded piece.
- Pour some of the leftover melted candy melts onto a plate, and microwave until the leftover chocolate is soft again. Place one half of the chocolate edge side down, and then on top of the other half to seal it. Spoon (well, spatula) melted chocolate around the seal where the 2 half meet if needed to ensure powdered hot chocolate doesn’t come out.
How to Decorate Hot Chocolate Bombs
The world is your oyster with decorating these bad boys, but I like to keep it simple. I add a dollop of colored white candy melt colored with food coloring, almost to look like its ice cream dripping down the sides. Then, I added sprinkles. You could decorate these a few ways
- Drizzle different colored chocolate on top.
- Use a plethora of different toppings- nuts, toasted coconut, marshmallows, sprinkles, etc.
- Crush up cookies and add them on top.
- Write initials or words with chocolate in a piping bag on top (or Valentine sayings!).
To enjoy hot chocolate bombs, place them in a mug of warm milk, and they burst open into delicious sweet hot chocolate!
Give them a good stir, and enjoy! These keep for quite a while depending on what you use. If you are giving them as gifts, I recommend putting them in cupcake liners, and in plastic treat bags with super cute Valentine’s Day ribbon.
