We love easy one pan meals and this Ground Turkey Orzo Skillet with Tomatoes is so easy and delicious! It only takes about 30 minutes to make and everything is made in one pan for a super easy weeknight meal everyone loves.

Healthy Ground Turkey Recipe

Sometimes I don’t know what to do with ground turkey when I have it in my fridge. My go to recipes are usually meatloaf and burgers but it’s nice to mix it up once in a while!

If you’re wondering what ground turkey to buy, here’s a great article. It explains what pieces of the turkey ground turkey is made of, fat content, etc.

One Pan Ground Turkey Orzo Dinner: How to Make it

  • In a skillet, brown ground turkey with olive oil.
  • Add in diced onion, and red bell pepper.
  • Add can of drained fire roasted tomatoes.Add more olive oil if needed, then add orzo. Saute until golden brown.
  • Add broth mixture (half chicken broth, half tomato sauce). Reduce heat to low.
  • Cover and cook for about 5 minutes. Stir, recover, and allow to simmer until fully cooked.
  • Top with cheese and serve!

One of my favorite parts about this recipe is that you can add whatever you have in your kitchen (or substitute for items you don’t have!).

Here’s a few ideas to modify this recipe:

  • Use seasoned tomato sauce if you want more flavor! Any will do.
  • Add more vegetables! Zucchini, mushrooms, chopped portobellos, carrots, green beans, peas, cauliflower or even sweet potatoes.
  • If you don’t want to use tomato sauce, just use chicken broth.  You could also add some wine if you like the flavor.
  • Add fresh herbs: thyme, basil, tarragon, rosemary, anything from your herb garden.
  • Want less carbs? Use only 1/2 cup of orzo plus 1 cup of liquid.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1/2 tbsp italian seasoning
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/2 cup diced bell pepper
  • 1 8 oz can of fire roasted tomatoes (drain well)
  • 1 cup orzo

Broth Mixture

  • 1 cup tomato sauce (marinara works in a pinch)
  • 1 cup chicken broth (or water)

Topping

  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  • Add olive oil to a medium size pan with a lid. Turn on medium high heat.
  • Add ground turkey, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper. Sauté until fully cooked. Add bell pepper and onion, sauté until almost translucent.
  • Meanwhile, combine tomato sauce and chicken broth (or water). Whisk well to combine and set aside.
  • Add drained can of fire roasted tomatoes. Stir to combine.
  • Add orzo. Once orzo is golden brown, add tomato sauce/chicken broth (or water) mixture. Reduce heat to a low simmer and place lid on pan. Stir once every 5 minutes to prevent orzo from sticking.
  • Dinner is done once liquid is fully absorbed into orzo. Top with cheese and basil if desired. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, serve & enjoy.

This looks so yummy and I’m excited to try it, but I’m a bit confused, could I trouble you to clarify a few things??- The recipe says tomato sauce but there’s a jar of marinara sauce pictured in recipe write up, which one should be used? There is also references to tomato/water mixture but the ingredient list calls for chicken broth, those are interchangeable right?

Made it exactly as written, except I substituted the mozzarella for parmesan, as it was what I had on hand. Such a quick, easy, and delicious recipe. Adding this to the rotation, and looking forward to throwing in some of those additional veggie suggestions. Thank you!
