HONEY GLAZED SALMON WITH ORANGE AND GINGER…what a wonderful combo for salmon! Just a few wholesome ingredients and WOW! Easy clean up and leftovers for tomorrows lunch!
My taste buds are going through mid life crisis. There are a lot of foods that I used to love and can’t eat anymore. Have you guys ever had that happen? Soy sauce is one of them. A lot of the glazed salmon recipes have that ingredient….so I made up my own version! (I also no longer like fresh tomatoes, ketchup, nutmeg and martinis ! I can live without ketchup but martinis…come on! ) Although, now I crave pesto, plain yogurt, lime and bourbon flavored anything ,including just bourbon, so it’s not all bad..
How to make Honey Glazed Salmon with Orange and Ginger
This is a simple little glaze you whip up. No need to marinate since we are grating the ginger and garlic and using orange zest. It infuses the honey really quickly. Just mix, pour and bake!
I covered my baking sheet in foil, which is a real clean up saver. The honey makes the salmon all crispy and crackly and tastes like heaven, but makes clean up no fun. What good is a quick dinner if you are scrubbing the pan all night?
I buy Steelhead Salmon (which is really a trout, but is a form of salmon), from Costco. The Atlantic farm raised salmon they sell has no flavor in my opinion. It’s a tick cheaper but not enough to warrant a salmon that tastes like newspaper. Not that I have ever ate newspaper….just to clarify.
PRO TIP: To grate the ginger and garlic, just peel and use the small size grate on your box grater or better yet, use a microplane. It’s the best ten bucks you will spend. I love this tool and use it for everything! Makes zesting a breeze too.
I lay sliced oranges around the salmon and let them get all brown while cooking in the glaze that runs off the fish. I don’t put them on the fish while baking. It leaves imprints that are not really pretty and also keeps the honey from caramelizing on the fish. Just toss them on after the salmon is done for garnish…sooo fancy!
SOME TIPS TO MAKE HONEY GLAZED SALMON WITH GINGER:
- grate your ginger and garlic to infuse the honey. If you don’t have fresh ginger you can use 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried.
- line your sheet pan with foil for easy clean up.
- lay the oranges to the side of the fish to caramelize not directly on the fish

This was delicious! I baked at 400 for 10 minutes, broiled on high for 4-5 minutes. Perfect texture (I’d say it was cooked to “medium.”) I served with steamed broccoli, tossed sesame salad, and garlic jasmine rice (1 cup rinsed jasmine rice + 1.5 cups water, 1 TB butter, pinch of salt, two cloves minced garlic). Bring water, salt, and butter to a boil, add rinsed rice and minced garlic. Simmer on low for 15-20 minutes. Absolutely amazing! Thank you!

This was one of the best salmon recipes I’ve tried!! I used tangerines instead of oranges because that’s what I had and the cooked tangerines were amazing!! I agree with everyone else that 15-20 mins is way too long for salmon. I did 15 +2 on broil and it was great, but a tad overdone for us. Next time will be 12 then maybe 2 on broil. Maybe 11 and 3. Regardless, a TOTAL winner. Thank you!

Thank you for the rave reviews Princi! I just updated this post yesterday with new cooking times based on all your wonderful feedback! This recipe did have a longer bake time than most salmon recipes because I was going for caramelization. However I agree if you want this a little more caramelized it is best to use the broiler for 1-2 minutes. Clink!

Fantastic!! I’m not a huge seafood fan, but this is incredible! My husband also liked it and has requested that I make it again. Definitely going into my make again recipe box.

I just had to comment on this! It’s a spect recipe!! I made it this W/end for a dinner party for 10 people. I used 10 x fillets instead and the dressing amount was still perfect. In fact there was enough to hold back to pour a little on each fillet before serving. I baked for 15 mins exactly and then grilled for a further 5 to get a bit of caramelisation. The salmon was flaky and delicious! It was a bit of a risk for me as I hadn’t trialed it so thank you !!! I served it with greens in butter (with toasted almonds) and crunchy potato wedges (in a lemon zest & paprika rub).. will be checking out your other recipes now! X

Great recipe! Came out perfect when I cooked it for 15-17 min and then put it under the broiler for 5 min. Thank you Kathi!!
David says
Was quite good, if very sweet. Might add some crushed red pepper next time to cut the sweetness a bit. Also, listen to the recipe when it says to coat the pan in foil. I just used a silpat, and woo boy was that a mess.
S says
Even though I only had powdered ginger, this turned out fantastic. The foil caught all of the mess and the salmon was thoroughly orange-flavored.

Do you think I could put some vegetables underneath the fish or would the glaze not caramelize (or which vegetables might go well? I was thinking perhaps butternut or indelicato squash cubes) thank you.
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
This would be a great sheet pan dinner! But I wouldn’t put them directly underneath the salmon. Spread the veggies and squash around the fish. The squash will soak up all that orange and ginger…yum, yum, yum! Brilliant!
Bc says
This sounds great, but if I cook it for the time notedin the recipe, it I should going to be waaay over cooked. I would check it after 12-15 minutes
Kathi @ LaughingSpatula.com says
Hi BC – I admit, 25 minutes sounds like a lot for fish, but it needs a few minutes for the glaze to caramelize and the sauce keeps it very moist. Hoping you love it when you try it!
Bc says
OK, so I made this with salmon steaks instead of a filet, and cooked them for 15-17 minutes at 375 and they were perfect.. The sauce did not carmelize, as you noted, but if I had cooked them longer they would have been overdone. Maybe next time I’ll cook them for 10 minutes then finish them off under the broiler. They were delicious!

I tried the crispy chicken and potato pan dinner. I used chicken breasts (had them on hand) instead of thighs. I also mixed garlic powder into the olive oil that I poured over the potatoes. I wanted, and got, a very garlicy flavor on the potatoes. I did not do the broccoli since it is not a fav but plan on trying chopped onion with this pan dinner. I m widowed and live alone so I need meal planning for one and this recipe easily translated to one. This ease of making this delish dinner has assured I make it at least once a week and never tire of it. Thank you so much for this recipe! It is a keeper!
